(Feb 9, 2021) Not BC, not even Canada, but it is from my own native home of Ireland and directly relevant. Today the Teaching Council (of Ireland) released their Guidance for Registered Teachers about the use of Social Media and Electronic Communication.

This Guidance seeks to support teachers in continuing to make the best use of electronic communication and social media tools. It is our intention that it be a useful reminder for some, or generate awareness for others, on the appropriate use of social media and electronic communication.

Gabrielle Barkany, spokeswoman for the Ontario College of Teachers, the provincial body that licenses and regulates public-school teachers, says there has been “a significant increase in reports of inappropriate electronic interactions” in the past decade, and estimates that roughly a quarter of the 80-90 disciplinary hearings held annually at the College involve inappropriate use of social media.

Trustee Mike Lombardi said certain rules are necessary to ensure teachers use good judgment and act as proper role models for their pupils.
